“Kerrie Campbell brought attention to this problem and as a result of that a lot of firms have changed their practices and pay policies and promotion policies with respect to female attorneys”

Sanford Heisler Sharp LLP, counsel for lead plaintiff Kerrie Campbell in a ground-breaking gender discrimination lawsuit against Chadbourne & Parke, LLP and successor firm, Norton Rose Fulbright, was named Employment Practice Group of the Year for 2018 by Law360. Ms. Campbell initiated the lawsuit in 2016, while still employed by Chadbourne. After the litigation commenced, two more (former) female Chadbourne partners joined the lawsuit and Ms. Campbell was expelled from the firm.

Over two years of contentious litigation, the Sanford firm successfully defeated Defendants’ bids for early dismissal and fought tirelessly for fair discovery. After obtaining a pivotal court order requiring Chadbourne’s five-member, all-male management committee and head of litigation to produce their personal emails, the Sanford firm secured a multi-million-dollar settlement, including: (1) a $3.1 million public settlement solely to resolve plaintiffs’ Equal Pay Act claims; and (2) additional private settlements for undisclosed sums to resolve all other claims arising from Defendants’ discriminatory and retaliatory conduct.

The Chadbourne/Norton Rose gender discrimination lawsuit garnered global media attention and sparked public dialogue about unacceptable gender disparities in pay, power and promotions entrenched in the legal profession.

Deeply committed to social justice, the Sanford firm has distinguished itself by taking on cases that other firms consider too complex, challenging, novel and risky. The Chadbourne/Norton Rose lawsuit exemplifies the effective, if not essential, impact that ground-breaking public litigation wields to stamp out injustice and make a difference for the good.

David Sanford, firm chairman and co-founder, was also honored as one of Law360’s “Employment MVPs,” and “Titan of the Plaintiffs’ Bar.” Mr. Sanford had this to say about the impact Ms. Campbell has had on the issue of gender inequality in the law business:

“Kerrie Campbell brought attention to this problem and as a result of that a lot of firms have changed their practices and pay policies and promotion policies with respect to female attorneys”

In 2017, building on professional expertise and client relationships developed over 30 years, Ms. Campbell founded her own firm, KCAMPBELL-LAW, PLLC, to advance her core values of truth, transparency, fairness and equal justice.
